Why This Exists

I started noticing something.

When I looked closely at my own life, I started to see people everywhere—not just in photographs or memories, but in the way I think, the things I notice, the words I use, the things I believe, and the things I make room for. I could see the parts of myself that feel distinctly mine, but also the parts I can trace back to someone else: a phrase someone said years ago, a lesson that stayed with me, a way of looking at the world that I didn't have before they were in it, a kindness I still remember, or someone who showed up at exactly the right moment without ever knowing what their presence would mean to me later.

I began to wonder how many pieces of ourselves are actually made from other people.
How much of who we become is shaped quietly, almost invisibly, by the people who cross our paths.
And I realized I didn't want to simply remember those people.

I wanted to pay attention to what they left behind, so I began asking to take portraits of them.

A way of exploring what they have meant.

What changed because they were here. What I carry because I know them. What is still unfolding in me because our paths crossed.

Salt & Sunrise exists because some kinds of gratitude deserve more than a thank-you.

Sometimes they deserve to be witnessed. To be photographed. To be written down. To be remembered while they are still happening.

These are the people whose presence left evidence.

And this is my way of noticing it.
